The 56-year-old star - who gave up his career in medicine to become a comedian - has revealed he once ate a takeaway order meant for a patient after she begged for him to go and visit her.

However, the 'TV Burp' host was busy in casualty when one of his fellow medics gave him a note asking him to go to her ward because she thought she was dying.

As quoted by the Daily Star newspaper, he said: "This lady, I knew she was unwell, but we certainly weren't expecting her to die - it was something quite minor.

"And I was so busy in casualty that I didn't have time to see her.

"The end of the day comes, so we go to the ward and she was found dead in the doctor's office with the telephone in her hand.

"And my houseman said, 'Maybe she was trying to call you?' And I said, 'Oh, thanks!'

"But then the mystery was solved - when about half an hour later a pizza turned up! And yes we did [eat it] - it would have been a shame to waste it!"

Meanwhile, Harry previously considered returning to the medical profession at the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, when he was asked to join the staff at London's Nightingale Hospital to help fight the pandemic, but he admitted it was a "scary" prospect reviving his former career.

He said: "That was quite a funny thing. Although it wasn't funny at the time, it was really scary! When this whole lockdown thing happened I got an email saying 'We're calling back all retired doctors, you're back on the register, do you want to come back?'

"When the pandemic started they were worried about getting overwhelmed and they thought they were going to need everyone - 'We're even going to need Harry Hill!' - but it never happened and fingers crossed it never does!

"Because if you were on a ventilator and you wake up with me leaning over you, you'd think things had got really bad!"
