The 51-year-old finance manager accepted his defeat with grace, noting that the result was "half expected."

He said: "I was half expecting that result because if you look at the showstopper compared to everyone else’s mine was quite basic."

Jairzeno acknowledged it was time for him to leave the Channel 4 programme after his tricky first week, which saw him fail to meet the "gravity defying" brief, when he served up a "pink blob".

He said: "In the first challenge I really did run out of time and I was rushing around, although I finished, it didn’t have my usual presentation. In the technical I overbeat the mixture and that didn’t go in my favour. Then the mast on my boat fell down in the showstopper, and I lost a sail, so it didn’t look as great at the end as all the other bakers."

After making it through to biscuit week, Jairzeno attempted to make a Tall Ship interactive toy showstopper but it turned out to have a shoddy paint job and broken masts, which ultimately led to his sinking.

On the show, he quipped: "It’s more of a shipwreck than a ship."

The Trinidadian then went on to show his shipwreck to judges Paul Hollywood, 55 and Prue Leith, 81, who were less than impressed.

Fellow contestant Amanda. 56, was sad to see her fellow baker go after suffering a similar fate herself when her handcrafted rocking horse biscuit tumbled to the floor.

She said after his exit: "I am absolutely gutted. He’s so lovely and laid back. His flavours are amazing, I don’t understand…well someone has to go don’t they?"
