The 56-year-old actor couldn't speak due to the "bitter cold" in Northern Ireland that numbed his mouth, but he loved being able to film the crime drama in his homeland.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper, he said: "It was incredibly cold, particularly when we went down to Strangford Lough. We’d transport crew, equipment, food, toilets, to these remote islands and it was bitterly cold, the wind really cuts you.

“At times it was hard to speak. My mouth would be paralysed and I couldn’t get my jaw moving. It was challenging but fabulous.”

'Bloodlands' tells the story of Northern Irish police detective Tom Brannick - played by Nesbitt - who aims to track down a legendary assassin after a car containing a possible suicide note is pulled out of Strangford Lough.

Also joining Nesbitt are 'Derry Girls' co-stars Ian McElhinney and Kathy Kiera Clarke, and 'Top Boy's Lisa Dwan, as well as Charlene McKenna, Lola Petticrew, Chris Walley, Michael Smiley, and Susan Lynch.

Additional cast members include Peter Ballance, Cara Kelly, Flora Montgomery and Asan N'Jie.

'Line of Duty's Jed Mercurio will act as exec producer with Hat Trick Productions on the drama, created by new writer Chris Brandon.

Jed said: "HTM Television is honoured such a prestigious cast will bring to life Chris Brandon's thrilling, thought-provoking series Bloodlands."

Tommy Bulfin, BBC Commissioning Editor, Northern Ireland, added: "We're delighted that such an incredible cast, including some of Northern Ireland's finest acting talent, have come together for Bloodlands." '

It marks Asan's first role since being sacked from 'Emmerdale' after a heated bust-up with Jamie Lomas at the TV Choice Awards in 2019.

He said at the time: "I sincerely apologise to everybody who has been affected especially Jamie Lomas, the whole 'Emmerdale' team, our audience, ITV, my family, and the organisers of the TV Choice Awards. "I am devastated, accept full responsibility for my actions and I am determined to learn from this."
