The 42-year-old actress has played Leanne Battersby on the ITV soap since 1997, but her two boys, Harry, 14, and 11-year-old Sam - who she shares with her husband, former 'Brookside' star Robert Beck - don't take much interested in the cobbles, and just view the ITV soap as "mummy's work".

She said: "The boys aren't interested at all. I don't think they even realise how big the show is.

"I was telling my youngest, because he's quite the actor himself, 'You know 'Coronation Street' is 60 years old this year? That's like the longest-running TV programme ever.'

"And he was like, 'Oh, is it?'

"It's always been part of their lives, but it's just mummy's work for them."

Jane thinks Sam may well try to forge a career in the acting industry in the future, but she wants to make sure he knows it is "highly unusual" for a star to be in a role for a long period of time.

She said: "I think Sam has got the bug. It's a difficult one, because I was 11 when I got my first job, so I could never really discourage it.

"I just need to make him aware that to be in regular work for a long period of time is highly unusual.

"I don't just want him to be aware of the nice bits because I know from my own experience and my husband's that it's not all great.

"You've just got to support them and hope that they make the right choices."

And the star believes her eldest son Harry could go into a job involving computers, which she admits is "no bad thing".

She added to OK! magazine: "Harry is the quieter one, he's into computers, and is more studious.

"So I can see him going into that. And that's no bad thing.

"The world is run by computers isn't it? But you just want them to be happy and well, don't you?"
