Jeremy Clarkson is said to have "hit" a producer over a "catering issue", according to a source that spoke to The Sun newspaper.

This resulted in Clarkson's suspension from the BBC and hit television series Top Gear, after he allegedly punched the programme's assistant producer Oisin Tymon, 36, after being told there was no food available following a shoot in Newcastle.

The source explained: "It was all over a catering issue. Jeremy just saw red and hit the assistant producer, who he blamed for not having organised the food."

A television insider said that other crew members were left "stunned" following his lashing out, and think it may be the BBC's final straw after Jeremy was told he was on his "final warning" last year, after saying the N-word whilst reciting a nursery rhyme.

"Jeremy had a massive bust-up with one of the male show producers and he ended up smacking him in the face. Everyone was absolutely stunned. Jeremy is an incredibly valuable asset to the BBC. He is 'Top Gear' and the show makes more money than anything else on their roster.

"They have given him countless chances, but when you hit someone, there is no way round it. They had no choice but to suspend him. It's very early at this stage, but the fact no one else has been suspended is very telling."

His suspension was announced by the BBC on Tuesday, March 10, and they also revealed that the final three episodes of Top Gear's new series were to be axed following Jeremy's "fracas" with a producer, which they're now investigating.

The statement read: "Following a fracas with a BBC producer, Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended pending an investigation. No one else has been suspended. 'Top Gear' will not be broadcast this Sunday."

A source close to the broadcaster however is insisting Jeremy "didn't punch anyone", and now fans are campaigning for him to be reinstated with the hashtag #BringBackClarkson on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Jeremy has made light of his situation and said: "I'm having a nice cold pint and waiting for this to blow over."
