The ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ presenter uses either one depending on his fluctuating weight, with one housing garments for when he is slimmer and the other containing items for when he’s heavier.

The 61-year-old TV star wrote in his Sunday Times column that the second one is his “every day cupboard'' and mused about how someone else would donate his other clothes to the charity shop and why holds on to them.

He said: "I hang on to them because in my mind, after I’ve been on my next diet, I’ll be able to fit into them again.”

However, he admitted: “I suspect that in reality the thin clothes will never be anything more than nostalgic reminders of happier times, but you never know."

In the piece - which lamented on the potential closure of Savile Row suit makers Gieves & Hawkes potential closure - Clarkson explained how suits make him “impatient” for a number of reasons, including the variety, the time it takes to fit and how expensive they are.

However, he attributed his body shape as to why he needs to get customised formal wear.

The former 'Top Gear' star wrote: “I’m hundreds of feet long and Lowry thin everywhere except round the middle, where it looks as if I’ve eaten a space hopper. This means I’m simply not on any clothing designer’s percentile chart.”
