The 56-year-old former footballer is a contestant on the upcoming celebrity special of the hit game show - but John has revealed that the 60-year-old host wasn't much of a help to him during his time on the programme.

He told the Daily Star Sunday newspaper: "You can get Jeremy to help you with a question, but he's useless. There's no point asking him.

"When I told people I was going to be a contestant they all said, 'Get rid of the Jeremy lifeline very early'. And I found out that really is the case.

"It's not wise to wait to use him on a later question. It's best to use the other lifelines last."

'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' is famed for its intense studio atmosphere, with so much money being on the line.

But John - who played for Liverpool and England during his trophy-laden playing career - has insisted he wasn't overawed by the experience.

He said: "We all think we know about general knowledge. But when you're on a quiz show you don't know what questions are going to be asked.

"You can't prepare for it. You just have to keep your fingers crossed.

"I'm not a nervous character. It's multiple choice, so you can always have a bit of a guess.

"I wasn't nervous when I used to play football either. It didn't make any difference to me if I was playing in front of 1,000 fans or 100,000 fans.

"There was no reason to be nervous. The people watching aren't going to come on to the pitch. Whatever the crowd, you're still playing against 11 men, so there's no difference."
