Corrie's series producer Kate Oates - who will depart the role in June - has dropped a huge hint that the Weatherfield veteran could make a cobbles comeback as her popular character Bet Lynch, who has not been seen on the soap since 2003.

Kate said: "I bet Julie would be great on the show. If the story fitted, then why not? It could happen.

"She was definitely considered a modern day icon. She still is."

Former Rovers Return landlady Bet was known for her love of all things leopard print, and Kate is hoping she can don her leopard print coat to honour the soap stalwart should Julie wow Weatherfield again.

She added to the Daily Star Sunday newspaper: "I've got a leopard print coat ... so I'd be in competition with her when it came to clothes."

Kate recently hinted a big-name star could be set to make a 'Corrie' comeback, which led to speculation Charles Lawson will reprise his role as Jim McDonald.

He has since confirmed the exciting news, and will return in an "explosive" plot.

Charles said: "They wanted me back full time this year but I couldn't do it as I am doing 'Rebus' on stage, and a thriller.

"I'm going to film a bit but then will be back again next year."

A 'Coronation Street' spokesman said: "Jim is such a hugely popular character.

"We're delighted he is coming back for what will be a typically explosive Jim storyline."

Kate previously teased fans they could expect an "extremely well-known character" to grace the cobbles with their presence again.

In response to speculation he was returning, Charles tweeted at the time: "I couldn't possibly comment. Everyone keeps telling me I am."

This comes after Sean Wilson reprised his role as Martin Platt in March for a brief spell for the first time since 2005.
