The 'Good Morning Britain' presenter has been caring for Derek since he was admitted to hospital after contracting COVID-19 back in March and admits that Elton's music has been extra poignant as the music legend has been so "personally kind" to her during her husband's battle with the disease.

Kate told Woman & Home magazine: "One of the artists that we play a lot on Smooth (the radio station where she hosts a mid-morning show) is Sir Elton John. I love 'Step into Christmas'.

"And it feels particularly special this year because he's been so personally kind to me about the situation with Derek, and we've been playing Elton's music to Derek while he's been in hospital."

Kate and her family – daughter Darcey, 14 and 11-year-old William, face the festive season without Derek as he remains in hospital but she thinks Christmas will be even more special this year after the anguish caused by the pandemic.

The 53-year-old TV presenter said: "There seems to be a general feeling this year that we need Christmas and New Year more than ever.

"We need things to feel like they're moving forward because it's been such a strange and tough year.

"All the things we love about Christmas – family, loved ones, indulgence and getting together – having been restricted for so long, it makes it even more precious this year."
