The 49-year-old actress took a year off from her role as Jane Beale last summer after being encouraged to do so by her friend and fellow 'EastEnders' star Tamzin Outhwaite (Mel Owen), but she is now nearing the end of her 12 months away from Walford.

In a tweet to Tamzin, Laurie wrote: "my year off is almost over , I haven't regretted it for a minute, as your wise words said.. it's been amazing to just be mum and get off the hamster wheel.. thank you my dear friend of 30 years.. best advice ever (sic)"

Tamzin replied: "Time stops for nobody... you won't forget that year. Or ever regret it.

Love you (sic)"

The 47-year-old actress then wrote: "Does this mean you are coming back to @bbceastenders ??? [fingers crossed emoji] (sic)"

Laurie is keen to do "some other bits and pieces" before heading back to Albert Square, but admitted she could return at some stage.

She wrote on Twitter: "Ha ha!!im looking to do some other bits and pieces.. and take some courses on something I've always been interested in..but, you never know at some point....(sic)"

Earlier this month, Laurie and Tamzin's co-star Jo Joyner admitted her 'EastEnders' character could be dead, and she swore she would not return to the soap after giving up her weekends to film night shoots before Christmas.

She said: "I gave 'EastEnders' my Saturdays late last year, but I didn't realise when they asked that it was going to be night shoots with rain machines, from 2am till 2pm - so it was my Saturdays and Sundays, and I swore I wouldn't do it again.

"I don't know what happened to Tanya - I don't watch it. It could be that she's been killed.

"It only takes a phone call, doesn't it?"
