General Zod is a Superman villain that’s already made his DC Extended Universe debut in Man of Steel, but a different version of the character has now been confirmed for CW series Supergirl, with Mark Gibbon taking on the role in the show’s second season finale.

CBR confirmed that Gibbon will be playing the adversary, with the actor having already appeared in Man of Steel as an oil rig worker, and as three small characters in Smallville. Now though he’s taking on his biggest DC role to-date, and should be causing some big trouble for Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) when he makes his debut as Zod.

Not only that, but a big surprise has been teased for Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie (Floriana Lima), whilst Teri Hatcher is also expected to return in her villainous role as Rhea before the end of season 2.

No plot details surrounding Zod’s inclusion in the show have yet been revealed, so there are a lot of ways this could pan out. The most popular theory seems to be that Gibbon will be making a small appearance in the finale episode, setting up his overriding arc as the ‘Big Bad’ of Supergirl season 3.

With Tyler Hoechlin also coming back as Superman himself in the season 2 finale however, and with his many battles against Zod a common thread no matter which DC universe the characters are a part of, the appearance could also be a fleeting one.

No matter what, his inclusion has certainly got tongues wagging.

Supergirl returns in the US on April 24 on The CW, and comes back to Sky1 in the UK shortly thereafter.
