The 38-year-old actor - who is married to co-star Charley Webb - loves shooting scenes with Amy (Tracy Metcalfe) but the pair haven't been filming together as much on the ITV soap of late after Tracy dumped his alter-ego David Metcalfe, but he hopes they will reconcile in "a year or so".

He said: "It's sad and it's sad for me as Matthew not working with Amy anymore because we've had the best couple of years together. She's ridiculous and we laugh on set every second we're on set together. I really miss that.

"I am hoping eventually, depending on what happens between David and Maya, that there will be a path as to where David and Tracy might get back together, which has been talked about. Who knows?

"There might be a way of David and Tracy reconciling things in the future, but I've got a feeling it won't be for a year or so."

While David and Tracy sleep together, prompting him to hope they will get back together, she regrets the action, leaving him "devastated".

Matthew added: "He's a bit of an a*****e, and he's realised this. In the back of his mind he thinks he's going to get her back.

"He thinks, with a little bit of flirting and the old David magic that he'll get her back, but she's just not up for it at all.

"However, she does have a moment of weakness and she does sleep with him. But she regrets it immediately. He's devastated about it."

But before David and Tracy can reconcile, he looks set to have a future with married Maya Cavanagh (Louisa Clein).

Matthew explained: "I think things are going to develop with David and Maya.

"We just filmed a scene last week where David has almost lost the plot, and it's the day he realises him and Tracy aren't getting back together.

"Instead of giving himself at least a few weeks to gather his thoughts, he rings Maya straight away and invites her round to the house. So that's his way of dealing with it.

"So, there's definitely more to come with David and Maya."
