The former 'The Wright Stuff' host recently announced his wife Amelia - who he married in 2010 - is expecting the couple's first child, a baby girl, after eight years of failed IVF attempts, and he has now revealed he wants to be his little girl's main guardian when she arrives into the world in February.

He told the latest issue of HELLO! magazine: "I'm excited - and terrified.

"I've only ever held two babies in my entire life!

"Now I can envisage becoming the primary carer when Amelia returns to work.

"Every day we keep pinching ourselves because we can hardly believe it's finally happening."

After their seventh attempt to fall pregnant, Amelia admitted she felt her life "flash before (her) eyes".

Describing the "terrifying" ordeal, she said: "I felt an explosion inside of me, and thought, 'That's it, I'm dying.'

"It was terrifying. I could see my life flash before me and knew that if doctors had waited to operate, I wouldn't make it to the morning."

However, after getting this far, they decided to give IVF another go.

She said: "I couldn't bring myself to give it up.

"Without any expectation, I wanted one last shot."

Announcing the couple's baby joy on Twitter, Amelia wrote: "After eight challenging years of IVF, we are thrilled to announce that on our last roll of the dice, we got lucky and are expecting a baby girl. Woo hoo! @Matthew_Wright. (sic)"

The former tabloid journalist retweeted the announcement, and added: "Hope you enjoyed today's show as much as we did making it: ta for all your kind words re @mrsameliawright and pregnancy.

"She's been thru hell she really has. Feel super blessed to have such lovely followers xx. (sic)"

Prior to sharing their baby news, Matthew, 53, quit his job fronting 'The Wright Stuff' - with Jeremy Vine taking over the Channel 5 slot with his own titular current affairs show - after 18 years in the role.

The broadcaster now has his own weekday show on talkRADIO.
