The former 'Great British Bake Off' host was reluctant to believe in spirits and the afterlife, until she met a psychic who described her grandfather "to the nth degree".

She said: "I’m not really into psychics. I didn’t believe in it until I met a psychic who said, 'Your grandad is around you all the time.’ She just described him to the nth degree."

The 53-year-old star - who makes up one half of telly double act Mel and Sue, alongside Sue Perkins, 52 - went on to reveal she now knows that her grandfather would be disapproving of her hair.

Speaking on the 'My Wardrobe Malfunction' podcast, she said: “He hated his daughters wearing make-up and nail varnish because he was a very proud man. She said, 'He’s coming through very strongly saying he hates the way you dye your hair.' "

The presenter took the revelation in a positive way, as she told the humorous story to fashion guru Susannah Constantine.

She quipped: "And I just thought, 'Oh wow! OK, that’s good to know. I’ll rethink those foiled highlights next time I go to the hairdresser.' "

Mel's comments come just days after she and Sue admitted they can't bear to watch 'The Great British Bake Off' anymore.

They fronted the programme until 2016 when it moved from the BBC to Channel 4.

Sue said: "I just think it would make me sad to watch it. We gave it everything we had and we made a decision that was easy to make, but hard sometimes to reflect upon. You just wish it well."
