The 59-year-old actress - who played Stacey Shipman's mum Gwen West in the BBC sitcom and reprised the role for the 2019 Christmas special - admitted while she'd be happy to return to the role, she fears "that's it" as far as any new episodes are concerned.

Asked by Woman magazine if there are any plans for her to play Gwen again, she said: "I would. But as far as I know there aren't any plans for another series.

"I think that's it."

Meanwhile, Melanie's co-star Larry Lamb said recently it would be "short-sighted" if there wasn't more to come.

The 73-year-old actor - who played Mick Shipman - admitted he'd also relish the chance to reprise his role.

Asked if there will be more episodes, he replied: "I think it would be pretty short-sighted if there wasn't. I'd be happy to do more.

"Everybody that's involved with it sees it as a team event. If they're doing more, you're part of it."

Earlier this year, James Corden admitted it would be a "shame" not to work on more 'Gavin & Stacey'.

The actor co-created and wrote the sitcom with Ruth Jones, and he revealed he'd love to make another episode of the hit show after the Christmas special in 2019 ended on a cliffhanger.

James - who also plays Neil 'Smithy' Smith - explained: "As it stands right now, there aren’t any plans to do one, but that’s not to say that there isn’t the want or the inclination to do one … that special ends on such a... it’s so open-ended that I think it would be a shame to leave it there.

"That’s certainly my feeling and I think Ruth feels the same. It doesn’t feel like the end of a book, it feels like the end of a chapter, so I do feel like if we ever did another one that would be the end of it."
