The actor is best known for his role as beloved Winchester Club barman Dave Harris in popular comedy drama 'Minder', which he played from 1979 until its conclusion after 10 series in 1994.

Edwards passed away at his home in Scotland on May 23, and is survived by a son from his second marriage - to Christine Pilgrim - and by his third wife Valerie Edwards.

The star - who was also married to Yootha Joyce - delighted viewers with his portrayal of Harris, although it was a part he almost turned down.

He previously said: "Playing Dave in 'Minder' was my biggest TV role. Amazingly, it was just one day's work initially, and seeing the script made me realise why: there was only a couple of lines to say.

"My agent persuaded me to accept it, explaining that the part may grow and, of course, it did... I made just under a hundred episodes and I was 65 when it finished in 1994. At its peak, the series was watched by 16 million."

Edwards began his career in the 1960s in the cast of 'Dixon of Dock Green', and went on to appear in the likes of 'Z Cars', 'The Avengers' and 'Steptoe and Son'.

Although primarily working on the small screen, he did make the jump to movies in the early 1980s with parts in 'Legacy of Murder' and 'Jack of Diamonds'.

However, for the last 11 years of his career he focused on 'Minder', and retired from acting when the show came to an end.
