The episode, broadcast to 14 million viewers on October 8, 1970, was previously thought to only exist in audio form after the BBC wiped its master tapes in the 70s, but it will now be shown again after Eric Morecambe’s son found the lost tape in an attic.

Gary Morecambe discovered the unlabelled film can at the family home last year.

Now, ITV will show it as part of its 'Lost Tapes' series, which will feature the funniest sketches from the rediscovered show.

It also contains interviews with Gary, his mum Joan Morecambe as well as his sister Gail.

What's more, stars such as Ben Miller, Jonathan Ross, and Eddie Izzard are among celebrity fans of the pair who will feature in the programme.

Although the film was the first-ever 'Morecambe & Wise Show' to air on the BBC, the iconic comedy duo had appeared on the station before, in flop 'Running Wild' in 1954.

Despite the comedy sketch show being panned, resulting in an infamous review describing a TV set as "the box in which they buried Morecambe and Wise", the duo made a a successful comeback on the ITV station ATV in 1961, and returned to the BBC in 1968.

The pair fronted 175 shows over a 22-year TV career, and in their 70s heyday would regularly pull in more than 20 million viewers every week, and their Christmas Special is still repeated every year.

Eric passed away in May 1984 at the age of just 58 after collapsing on stage, while Ernie died aged 73 in March 1999.

'Morecambe & Wise: The Lost Tapes' is on ITV on Wednesday July 28 at 9pm.
