It's fair to say that Stranger Things has become one of the most talked about Netflix original series the streaming service has ever put out.

Taking place in the 1980s, the show follows the story of a young boy who goes missing, before blasting its characters into a world of government conspiracy, supernatural forces and some huge twists and turns.

Through eight episodes, viewers saw an intriguing and epic story unfold and, during the last few moments of the big finale, a door was left open hinting that Stranger Things would be returning in the near future, assuming it's renewed following its huge success.

Now, executive producer and director Shawn Levy has told /Film in a new interview that the show, if recommissioned, will go on for some time.

He explained: "We definitely are hopefuly to go several more seasons. And the plan is to continue with this set of characters while introducing a few critical key new ones next season. So I'll just say that a lot of the big mysteries get answered at the end of Season 1, but we are very much kind of unearthing new problems and questions that merit future stories and future investigation in the most enjoyable way. So we are in love with our cast and our characters.

"Things end up being resolved to some extent at the end of Season 1, but not entirely. And that's why we're so hopeful we get another few seasons to live with these people a little longer."

Stranger Things season 1 is available to watch in its entirety now on Netflix.
