The 38-year-old retired boxer has discussed starting a family with her girlfriend, Ella Baig, and the 22-year-old blogger will be the one who gets pregnant because she is the more “nurturing” of the two.

Nicola said: “Ella will probably carry the baby. She’s more nurturing than me.”

Despite their 16-year age gap, Nicola insisted it isn’t something the couple really think about.

She said: “I thought it might bother us but we don’t notice it. It might have something to do with my ADHD - I’m a bit immature sometimes.”

Although the pair try to divide chores equally in their home, the former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant gets left to one of the worst jobs.

She laughed: “I have to pick up dog poo from the garden after it’s been raining. It’s just horrible, right?”

And lockdown in the UK only served to bring the pair closer together, even though they had reservations because they are usually apart for long periods.

Nicola said: “We weren’t sure what it’d be like at first because normally I’m away quite a lot for work, so this was the first time we were stuck in a house together. But actually, it accelerated our bonding.”

The sportswoman began to think she was gay when she was 13 and it was a “heavy weight” she carried until she came out to her mother - and was stunned by how relaxed her mum was when she confided in her.

She recalled to The Times Weekend: “[Sexuality] was never talked about in school, you never saw anything on TV. All the time I felt this heavy weight on my shoulders and in the end I just couldn’t take the lying any more. I just wanted to be myself…

“So many scenarios had played through my head about what Mum was going to say or do, but she just said, ‘That’s fine,’ and put the kettle on and I was, like, ‘What? Is that it?’ ”

Although Nicola has been targeted by trolls because of her sexuality, their comments don’t bother her.

She said: “It doesn’t faze me at all. It’s like - try harder.”
