The 36-year-old actress - who plays Maxine Minniver in ‘Hollyoaks’ - joined the ITV soap opera in 1999 as Candice Stowe before departing in 2005, and the star feels honoured to have been given the chance to be part of the soap’s history as the show prepares to celebrate its 60th birthday.

In a birthday message on the 'Corrie' Twitter account, Nikki said: “I just wanted to say a very happy 60th birthday. I spent many wonderful years with yourselves playing Candice Stowe, she was pretty cool, and I will be forever grateful to you for letting me be even the smallest part of ‘Coronation Street’s history.

"So, yeah I just wanted to say I hope you have the most wonderful birthday and I am looking forward to seeing what happens over the next 60 years.”

What’s more, Nikki's 'Hollyoaks' co-star Annie Wallace - who plays Sally St. Claire on the soap - also wished ‘Coronation Street’ a happy birthday.

She said: “I just want to wish ‘Coronation Street’, from one soap to another, the biggest, bestest, most wonderful happy 60th anniversary. 60 years, can you believe it? The Queen of UK soaps! I first remember watching it when I was very very small and Ena Sharples was still in it and I was terrified of her! I kept thinking she was gonna come to my door and tell me off for being naughty, oh gosh!”

Annie’s favourite characters have always been married couple Roy (David Neilson) and Hayley Cropper (Julie Hesmondhalgh), who became the first permanent transgender character on the soap.

The star - who was appointed as an advisor for Hayley's initial storyline - added: “So many characters, so many storylines over the years. Pioneering, ground-breaking stuff for British television. My favourite? Obviously, Roy and Hayley Cropper, love them. So, happy 60th birthday, ‘Coronation Street’.”
