Sheridan Smith is adding some incredible roles to her career in recent years and shows no sign of slowing down, especially so with upcoming ITV series No Return.

As Kathy, Smith plays a doting mother and wife, whose life is turned upside down when her son is invited to a beach party by a fellow holidaymaker in Turkey, staying in the same hotel.

What follows is an accusation of sexual assault against Kathy’s son, who must fight for his freedom in a foreign country, plagued by media coverage and battling against the judgement of other vacationers.

Speaking with RadioTimes.com, Smith said of the script: "I read it and was gripped. I had to know what happened. And it instantly gave me that jelly belly feeling of, 'What would you do in that situation?’"

"It's ordinary people in an extraordinary situation," she continued. "And Kathy is an amazing lead role. I was just instantly like, 'Wow', and was very honoured to be asked. She's a great character. Fiercely loyal; fiercely protective, and someone I could relate to.”

Describing the “high angst” series, she added: “I instantly thought that this has never been done. I've never read anything like this before. And from the minute [Kathy's 16-year old son] Noah was arrested, that's it. Four hours of intense, high drama.”

Michael Jibson, Sian Brooke, Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Murat Seven, David Mumeni and Jodie Campbell will all also star in the show.

Having welcomed her son in 2020, Smith has admitted she was in tears when attending the read-through for the series.

Exactly when we’ll be able to watch No Return remains to be seen, as ITV haven’t announced a specific date for its debut, instead simply saying that it is ‘coming soon’. Keep an eye out in early February!
