The 39-year-old actor played Sol Patrick in the Channel 4 soap from 1997 to 2001, and he had such fun playing the troubled character - who used to anger Ruth (Terri Dwyer) and Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor Dawson) - he is keen to reprise his role in the near future.

He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "I'd love to go back to 'Hollyoaks'. If I came back it'd be awesome because I'd have a bit of a tan and would cause havoc with the Osbornes again.

"I'd love to see it, I loved the character. Fingers crossed."

Paul's latest role has seen him star in hit play 'Worth a Flutter' - which is written by Michael Head, and also features model-turned-actress Lucy Pinder - and he is hoping 'Oaks' bosses might have been on a scouting mission to check out his performance.

He added: "I think the producers just want to see me do a bit of acting. I'm going to start to build the credits up and they'll hopefully think, 'Oh, yeah, let's get him back on.'

"I hope 'Hollyoaks' will have a spy in the audience when I'm doing 'Worth a Flutter'."

Sol was bad tempered, spent time in a Young Offenders Institute, and went off the rails following the death of his mum Jill Patrick (Lynda Rooke), which resulted in him being kicked out by Jack Osborne (Jimmy McKenna), forcing him to sleep rough.

While on the streets, he met prostitute Jess Holt (Frankie Hough), who he eventually fled the village with in 2001 after her pimp had burnt down the pub, nearly blinding Sol.
