The pair worked together on the first seven series of 'The Great British Bake Off' before Mary quit when the show moved from the BBC to Channel 4, and bosses of the US adaptation are said to be keen to recreate the judges' British-based success across the pond.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "The Mary and Paul combo is a winning formula and American bosses are well aware of that.

"They saw how much of a success 'Bake Off' was on the BBC and are keen to recreate it."

ABC Network President Channing Dungey is "excited" about how the US version is going and is hopeful about Mary, 82, joining the programme, but it is "depending on schedule".

She said: "Audiences really get excited about the contestants and the way in which the show unfolds.

"The format is not that different from the British version but I think viewers respond to the hosts and the people we have here.

"We are excited about the way we are doing the show here in America."

This comes after the third season of 'The Great American Baking Show' was pulled from air in December after Paul's fellow judge Johnny Iuzzini was accused of sexual harassment.

The series had aired its premiere but it did not feature the remaining episodes and ABC announced the winner on its website.

Paul, 51, was making his debut as a judge in the third series having previously taken on the same role on the CBS version of the programme, 'The American Baking Competition', in 2013, but that was axed after one series.
