Critically acclaimed series Prison Break was originally only set to be a single season, it’s been revealed. The show – which stars Wentworth Miller as lead Michael Scofield – eventually spanned four seasons back during its original run, and has now returned for a fifth almost a decade later.

Paul T Scheuring, the show’s creator gave the news to Digital Spy, explaining: “In the beginning, I remember saying, ‘Look, there’s a great many characters in the show, and I know where it all goes. I can tell you the final frame.

“To me, it is critical for any writer to know their final frames. I knew every single aspect of the original series. They said, ‘It has to be 22 episodes’. And I said, ‘OK. Well, we’ll do one season.”

The network however wouldn’t agree to just a single season, and so Scheuring had to stretch his idea out.

He added: “The initial idea was to escape halfway through that 22-episode run and then wrap it all up at the end of 22. But I said, ‘I can double that. I can have them escape at the end of season 1 and wrap it up at the end of season 2.”

Prison Break season 5 will start in the UK tonight (April 10) at 9pm on FOX.
