The 76-year-old TV presenter - who hasn't been part of the popular game show for 25 years - has agreed to let bosses use his face for one of the tasks in the new series, which airs this week on Channel 4.

Executive producer Neale Simpson said: "I was chatting to Richard before we started recording this series and I asked if we could use his face in one of the tasks.

"He was delighted at the thought of it."

The 'Rocky Horror Show' creator - who was the first presenter to front 'The Crystal Maze' between 1990 and 1993 - will be making his cameo via special coins which have been created for a new maths game.

Simpson is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying: "We thought it was a lovely gesture. When fans of the original series see that they'll know we've given him a little nod.

"It's been lovely getting his advice and suggestions. He's been really helpful to us."

At the height of the show's popularity, the series drew in up to six million viewers per episode, making it the most popular show on Channel 4 at the time.

Speaking on the game show's newfound success among younger audiences since its return, the executive producer recently said: "It was a huge privilege bringing this show back and it's been wonderful seeing young audiences engage with the new series and our magnificent Maze Master."

The new series hits our screens this Friday (09.06.18) at 9pm and will feature the likes of former model Katie Price, grime star Big Narstie, DJ and presenter Roman Kemp, and 'Made in Chelsea' star Binky Felstead.
