Sally Dynevor is worried about the lack of humour in 'Coronation Street'.

The 54-year-old actress - who has played Sally Metcalfe in the ITV soap since 1986 - wants the show to return to its more lighthearted roots rather than focusing on gritty, violent storylines as it has done in recent years.

Speaking to The Sun Online, she said: "I like the mixture of dark and comedy. I think when we lose the comedy that's the worrying time.

"Some of these stories have been absolutely amazing, but I'd have liked to see a bit more comedy if I'm absolutely honest."

And Sally hopes that new producer Iain Macleod - who is taking over from the departing Kate Oates - will usher in a new era for the soap.

She said: "Everyone is usually apprehensive when a new producer comes in. They have who they might like and dislike. I'm looking forward to Iain starting."

However, there are few laughs in the near future for Sally's character as Metcalfe is set to be arrested and jailed for fraud.

Sally will be falsely accused of being the mastermind behind Duncan Radfield's scam to get funds from the council and she will be arrested on Friday's (10.08.18) double episode during the Speed Daal family day celebrations.

A spoiler on the 'Coronation Street' website states: "The final preparations for the family day at Speed Daal are underway - only to be interrupted when the police come in looking for Sally.

"How will she react when they arrest her on suspicion of fraud, bribery and money laundering?

"Later, furious to discover that Barlow's Legal Services are representing Duncan, Sally and Tim pay Adam a visit."

Duncan engaged the services of Adam Barlow and Imran Habeeb after claiming he was the victim of Sally's plotting.

However, he had actually duped Sally by pretending he was setting up a charity foundation in memory of his late wife.

Sally helped him to get a grant from the council but only realised she had been tricked when it was too late.

And Sally admitted that the scandal will even cause trouble in Sally's marriage to Tim Metcalfe.

She said: "Sally is really shocked when she's arrested. She doesn't understand what's going on. It's very clever the way Duncan has done it. He's done it drip by drip.

"At first Sally thought he was quite cute and he was very nice to her, so she gave him the money when she really shouldn't have done.

"Sally thought it would all go away, but of course it doesn't. Duncan has even set up burner mobile phones. In the end, it looks to Tim that Sally has been having an affair with Duncan. It's all very complicated."
