The 43-year-old actress - who played DS Camille Bordey from 2011 to 2015 - is set to appear in a two-episode story during the new series early next year.

Sara told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "There are some characters that never leave you and I’m still Camille, wherever I go.

“After many years, people still reference and send their love to me as Camille, so it was obvious that I had to go back and the 10th anniversary is the perfect opportunity!

“I want to celebrate the longevity of 'Death in Paradise.' "

Her appearance in the BBC crime drama will see her character Camille in the middle of an investigation involving her mum Mayor Catherine Bordey - played by Elizabeth Bourgine - whose life is turned upside down after the death of a friend.

Sara will appear alongside current series regulars Ralf Little (DI Neville Parker), Don Warrington (Commissioner Selwyn Patterson) and Tobi Bakare (Sergeant JP Hooper).

She admitted her role on the show changed her life, and the comeback feels like a homecoming.

The star added: "It was life changing for me and I’m so grateful to the show.

"I feel like I’m going back home with new folks and old, to bring more fun and joy. I’m really happy to wear Camille’s 'twinkly-ness' again.”

Executive producer Tim Key explained how the team were keen to give viewers "some massive surprises" for the anniversary in 2021.

He said: "When we were planning our 10th series, we knew we wanted to treat the audience to some massive surprises, and welcoming Sara back to the show after six years is one of the best.

“It’s a joy working with her again and we can’t wait for the audience to see what’s in store for Camille.

“Seeing her filming on the beach in Guadeloupe was one of my favourite moments this series, and the really cool thing is that there are still more surprises to come!”
