The Weatherfield veteran - who has played Audrey Roberts in the ITV soap on and off since 1979 - has admitted she isn't too familiar with some of the newbies on the cobbles, but knows plenty of people in her nearest Sainsbury's store.

She said: "I seem to know the people at my local Sainsbury's more than I know half of the new 'Coronation Street' cast. What can I say?"

The 74-year-old actress has recalled the "lovely" days of working alongside Pat Phoenix - who played legendary 'Corrie' character Elsie Tanner - as well as Jean Alexander (Hilda Ogden) and Betty Driver (Betty Williams).

She added to the Daily Star newspaper: "Ah the days of Pat Phoenix. Pat was so easy to work with. And there was Jean Alexander and Betty Driver. It was a lovely time."

One of Audrey's latest storylines has seen her receive messages from beyond the grave from new clairvoyant character Rosemary Piper (Sophie Thompson), and Sue particularly enjoyed the plot because she believes in psychics in real life.

She said: "People will think I'm mad, but yes, I do have a belief [in psychics].

"I don't go every day and it doesn't take over my life, but I've had my palm read and I go to see these people, so this is a lovely storyline for me.

"I've been for palm readings, but mainly for Tarot readings and what's been interesting with this storyline is the way the writers have worked it.

"What makes Audrey think this woman is real is that she tells her something that Audrey thought she was the only one who could possibly know about. That made sense to me."
