The Split is set to make its return for a third and final series, following the start of production on the final batch of episodes back in London, in June 2021.

Created and written by Abi Morgan, the TV show will make its official return on April 4th, 2022 at 9pm on BBC One, with all episodes of the final series available from the same date on streaming service, BBC iPlayer.

Ahead of then, BBC has dropped a trailer for Series 3, which offers just a small glimpse into the chaos we can expect from the drama, ahead of its return.

You can watch that trailer for yourself, below:

Set in the complex and fast-paced world of London's high-end divorce circuit, the show is a multi-layered and at times humorous examination of modern marriage, with of course, the legacy of divorce hanging over proceedings.

The three Defoe sisters, Hannah (Nicola Walker), Nina (Annabel Scholey) and Rose (Fiona Button), along with their mother Ruth (Deborah Findlay) may look to some as though they have their lives in order, but things have gotten messy.

Writer and creator Abi Morgan is to put audiences through the emotional ringer in this final outing, as audiences watch a divorce lawyer confronted by the very thing she thought she would be able to avoid: her own divorce.

Meanwhile, Christie (Barry Atsma) makes their return, becoming the catalyst to the breakdown of Hannah's marriage, who is left picking up the pieces of 20 shattered years. Will she be able to reach an amicable separation agreement with her partner?

With battlelines redrawn, and the hope of a "good divorce" seemingly nothing but a pipe dream, it's going to be the most challenging and heartbreaking moment of some of these people's lives.

Enjoying an average of over six million viewers for its second series, along with over 19 million streams, The Split became the third most-watched drama series on BBC iPlayer in 2020, (excluding continuing drama titles).

It's clear that the show has a loyal fanbase, so it's going to be very interesting to see just how many people will be tuning in to see how everything comes to a close. One thing's for sure: it's not going to be a neat tying up of the knots! There's plenty of drama left to enjoy...

The Split returns on April 4th, 2022 at 9pm on BBC One, with all episodes available to stream on the same day via BBC iPlayer.
