The 28-year-old software engineer had planned to impress with a cake inspired by his love of classical music, but he admitted things went awry and he was given his marching orders on Tuesday (21.09.21).

He said: "It didn't go to plan at all. I have always been hard on myself, more than I really should be. But I am definitely proud of myself, and I never say that, so that must mean quite a bit."

Tom's Classically Spectacular Showstopper did not live up to expectations and fell short of the "defying gravity" brief.

He said: "My showstopper was a bit of a disaster. I wanted something that would celebrate my love of classical music, so I made a three-tiered lemon and almond sponge cake of a concert hall. "

However, despite his early knockout, Tom is determined to look back fondly on his time on the Channel 4 show.

He said: "The judges said that for an anti-gravity cake it didn't really defy the laws of gravity. I know it's hard to go out first and it was short and sweet, but it truly was an experience that I won't forget."

Tom's mum described as the "midnight baker" because when he lived at home she would often wake up to a sweet treat and a pile of washing up.

Channel 4's hit show - which aired on the BBC for the first seven series - returned last night for its 12th season with judges Paul Hollywood, 55, and Prue Leith, 81, taking their places in the iconic tent once again.
