The 39-year-old actor joked: “You’re lucky there was a loin cloth because I didn’t want one. It’s not a period drama until someone gets naked and covers themselves in blood. At least you’re showing [you’re] willing.”

He said of filming in the nude: “I was in Tilbury, in the moat, in the docks, with nothing on. We were trying to eke out drama from any opportunity and none of that makes the cut.”

The comments come after Hardy admitted he had worked to combine some of the world’s most classic villains and characters such as Bill Sykes and Hannibal Lecter.

He also told Digital Spy that whilst Taboo was described as a period drama, it may not be one for fans of Downton Abbey.

Hardy explained: “It’s the period drama that I desire to watch. People might not like this – so accept that, and push that. People will either like it or hate it, but it won’t be middle of the road. Either it’s going to go well or it’s going to go really f**king badly. But it was an effort made in the right pursuit, I believe.”

Following the story of James Keziah Delaney – a man who returns to his home after years of being missing and presumed dead – viewers will see his efforts to reclaim his father’s shipping business. It soon becomes apparent that Delaney is a man unafraid to get his hands dirty in order to get what he thinks he deserves.

Taboo begins Saturday, January 7 at 9.15pm on BBC One.
