The BBC sitcom will be back on TV screens in December, with the cast - which includes Arabella Weir, Alex Norton and Elaine C Smith - reuniting for a one-off episode which will be filmed amid coronavirus restrictions.

Steven Canny - the executive producer at BBC Studios Comedy, which makes the series in Scotland - said: "I’m delighted that 'Two Doors Down' is going to give people the neighbourly get-together they have been missing out on in recent times.

"Eric, Beth, Colin, Cathy, Ian, Gordon and, of course, Christine get together to celebrate in the way that only they can. This special episode is the complete package of uncomfortable comments, barbed compliments and, of course, a ton of laughs."

The BBC has announced that more details of the Christmas special will be released at a later date.

However, it has been confirmed that Graeme ‘Grado’ Stevely and Joy McAvoy, who play young couple Alan and Michelle, won't feature in the episode.

Earlier this year, meanwhile, the Beeb revealed that 'Two Doors Down' had been re-commissioned for a fifth series.

The comedy show first aired as a pilot in 2013, with series one launching in 2016, and the fifth season is expected to screen in 2021.

Shane Allen, the Controller of BBC Comedy Commissioning, said at the time: "The audience popularity across BBC Two and iPlayer has led to huge affection for a show that now rubs shoulders with 'The Royle Family' and 'Gavin And Stacey' as a firm and long-lasting sitcom favourite.

"The writing is so precise, the characters burst with comic vitality and the performances are a masterclass in comedy delivery."
