The Walking Dead is to make some dramatic changes in its ninth season, with Andrew Lincoln bowing out of the series and retiring the role of Rick Grimes forever. He’s not the only one moving onto other projects, with Lauren Cohan also reducing her time in the show as Maggie, set to appear in just six episodes before leading new ABC series Whiskey Cavalier. Still, new showrunner Angela Kang will be hoping to reel viewers in with an entirely new direction, and now we’ve got our first glimpse as to what to expect in a five-minute trailer straight from San Diego Comic-Con. Check it out below:

With Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) gone from the series, and an entirely new world with new rules set to develop right in front of our eyes now that Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has been captured, it looks as if the new batch of Walking Dead episodes is about rebuilding communities, making the most of a zombie-infested world, and learning how to ensure the Sanctuary and beyond is somewhere our favourite survivors are able to keep on keeping on.

Despite Cohan’s reduced role, Maggie seems to be the character moving to the forefront of the show in the teaser, leading her friends and companions with sheer grit and determination.

Though there doesn’t seem to be as much action as we saw in the All Out War story arc throughout season 8, there’s still plenty to chew over in the scenes we’ve been shown. New alliances look to be being forged, whilst old friendships are being broken; America’s number one drama looks like it’ll never be the same again.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC in the US on October 7, and to FOX in the UK on October 8.
