The 65-year-old actor admitted it's a dream of hers to step into the TARDIS as the titular Time Lord in the hit BBC sci-fi series, although she doesn't think casting an American is right for the show.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, she said: "I wanted to be Doctor Who and I still do. I think it would mean an evolution into being American and I don’t know that that’s correct for 'Doctor Who'.

"I don’t know I can usurp that. As much as I love it, I love watching it still in all the iterations.

"There are certain things that are blatantly all English. 'Doctor Who' is like that to me. It’s like Marmite. It’s very English and needs to stay that way."

Earlier this year, Whoopi revealed she actually tried to land the role at one point, but TV bosses turned her down.

This week, the 'Sister Act' star also revealed she's a big fan of 'EastEnders' after watching the soap when it aired on BBC America.

She added: "I got very involved in it and then it was gone.

“I was shouting, ‘Where is Peggy? Where is that woman with the cigarette? Dot Cotton! Where is she?’

"I loved all those actors and was sad that they stopped showing it in the US It should get done here, but it would take too much explaining.”

And while Whoopi has enjoyed a 40-year career, she admitted it has taken a long time for her to become someone with influence in the industry.

She explained: "You learn how to keep pushing for what you want in the ways that work in the experience you’re in.

“When you have a lot of clout, you can get a lot done, but when you don’t have clout, you can’t, but it doesn’t mean you’re not trying.

“I wanted to work. When I had the opportunity to say I would like to see XYZ happen, it happened here and there, but it didn’t take hold. Nothing happened hugely as things are starting to happen now. It’s taken some time but I’m glad to see it happen.”
