Why do you think the show has proved so popular?

Kids growing up today [are] more conscious of their impact on the world they live in, and there's a sense that people are fed up with the world as it exists right now. There have always been problems, but it seems like if our governments aren't doing everything they can, maybe there's something we can do. So there's this sense of challenging the idea of hopelessness. And it's nice to have a hero that you can invest in who's tragically flawed the way Elliot is. The way all these characters are. You see all of them stepping outside of themselves and finding some strength, deep down, to elicit some type of change in the world they live in.

How does the new season compare with Season 1?

It's very different, actually. But in such a good way. We start where we left off… Dealing with Elliot's acknowledgement of his headspace, and that's a very devastating place for him to be. He struggles with this idea of control and if control is even possible or just an illusion… The twists are not 'gotcha' moments though. Sam writes everything in a way that makes one question what's real and what's not… What is our reality? What effect can we actually have? It's very much a season that looks at the cause and effect of trying to have a revolution of that sort, what the negative consequences are, and what people will really do to get what they want. I would say that's a major theme of this season.

What is it like working with Christian Slater?

He's the man. I love him. Christian is a consummate professional. He comes in prepared, but can flip everything on the spot if he needs to. He's one of those actors where you get sucked into their performance - I mean, there's a reason why he's been working since he was a kid. And beyond all that, he's just a good guy.

Which is important if you're going to spend as much time as you do together!

Absolutely. And we both go through some pretty crazy ups and downs with our characters. Especially in scenes that we do together, it can get ravenous in a way. Really nasty. So to be able to break away and just have fun with the dude is a great way to work every day.

Mr. Robot season 2 is instantly available to UK viewers on Amazon Prime Video.
