The 30-year-old professional - who has scooped the mirrorball trophy six times since joining in season five - has confirmed he won't be taking part in the next series of the show.

The news comes days after he was cast in the new Broadway production of 'Singin' in the Rain', which is scheduled to open in January 2017, and weeks after his sister, Julianne Hough, announced she won't be back as a judge.

The upcoming season of the popular celebrity dance contest will see a number of changes as original judge Len Goodman will be back on the panel after taking time off to be with his family in the UK.

Just one contestant has so far been confirmed for the show.

'America's Next Top Model' winner Nyle Dimarco will be taking to the dancefloor, with further names expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Last season's winner, 17-year-old Bindi Irwin, credited Derek for their victory.

She said of her dance partner: "This entire experience has felt like the most-beautiful dance and Derek has inspired me every single day.

"[Derek] believed in me the whole way and it's thanks to you that we are here. You changed my life and I'm so happy."
