The BBC presenter's quickstep to 'Going Underground' by The Jam failed to impress as the pair were booted out of the competition after a dance-off against Jamelia, who was saved for the third time.

Speaking after his exit, he said: "I have to say, meeting Karen and working with her. The best dancer, the best teacher, the best friend. We've arguably been knocking out people better than us for several weeks now and that's all down to Karen's choreography and her persistence and understanding where I'm coming from.

"I think we will be friends for life and thank you for introducing us."

Whilst partner Karen Clifton added through tears: "You're amazing and your dedication and passion and love for what we all love to do has been absolutely amazing.

"I hope you continue dancing because if not, I'm going to come to Radio 2 and dance with you."

Meanwhile, the BBC Radio 2 DJ previously insisted he didn't mind being criticised on the BBC show because it teaches his daughters that they don't have to be perfect.

He said: "Our target needn't just be life's 'Strictly' glitterball trophies. You can enjoy yourself, as I truly have on my dancing journey, even if you aren't the best of the bunch. It's a message I want to portray to my daughters - and it's one that still struggles to get through to our youngsters today."
