The talent show judge became the new executive producer on the ITV show this year and revealed that her ageing mentor has head hunted her for the top position at his Syco Entertainment production company when he retires.

She said: "He's saying that himself. He feels it's happening and he's proud of it. I love nurturing talent. It's what I want to do with my future, management, developing an artist. I understand it from both sides. I've learned from the execs how cut-throat it is, as well as being a performer, which Simon doesn't because he's never done it."

The 'Crazy Stupid Love' singer - who joked that Simon is on his "last legs" - also claimed she and new judges Nick Grimshaw and Rita Ora have helped to guide him on the new series.

She told ES magazine: " "He does have his eye on the ball. But we guide him. Simon thinks if you're a star, you're ready no matter what age you are."

Meanwhile, Simon previously admitted he felt it was the right choice to make Cheryl executive producer because he already goes to her with ideas.

He said: "I naturally consult Cheryl more because she's been working with me for a long time.

"She's passionate about the show and isn't just in it for the cash. She's very involved and she's definitely happier than a year ago, much happier."
