The BBC Radio 1 DJ has defended his decision to take the judges' vote to deadlock on last night's (08.11.15) show after the two acts from his Boys category found themselves in the sing-off.

Nick wrote on Twitter: That was really tough tonight - there was NO WAY I would choose between any boys, they are my friends and I chose to let the public decide (sic)."

Nick's fellow judges Simon Cowell and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini had voted to send Mason home while Rita had opted to save him.

And although the 31-year-old presenter could've saved Sean by sending Mason home, he instead decided to let the decision go to the public vote which resulted in Sean leaving the competition.

Nick added: "Sean is SUCH a star, so shocked he's gone. but he's leaving with his head high, every performance was 100% and that's what matters."

Meanwhile, Sean has insisted he's not mad at his mentor for sealing his fate.

He told ITV's 'Good Morning Britain': "How can he choose between his children? That's how the game is, he couldn't do that as us boys, we were the bad boys, we were a group, a unit. Nick has been hands on with all of us. He is fabulous, wonderful to work with, so he couldn't. It's like 'Sophie's Choice', he can't make that decision."
