Following on from the Doctor Who series nine first look trailer, a teaser for the forthcoming Sherlock Special has been revealed by PBS.

This one-off isn't connected to Sherlock's modern-day episodes, instead re-imagining the show's beloved characters in the 1890s.

However, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will still star in their central roles, with co-showrunner Steven Moffat recently revealing that his desire to see Holmes and Watson in their traditional era was the reason behind the decision of using a Victorian setting.

Backstage in May at the House of Fraser BAFTA Television Awards, he said: "We've got, I think you can safely say, the Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson of a generation - we want to see them do it in the proper outfits - just once.

"That makes them the only two who've done both [period and contemporary] - apart from [Basil] Rathbone and [Nigel] Bruce, who we venerate, of course."

No broadcast date has yet been given for the Sherlock special, though it's expected to debut in the festive season, with a cinema release being planned for sleect countries.

Sherlock: The Special is available to pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray now at Amazon UK.
