If you thought the writers of Coronation Street would consider giving Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) some lighter storylines any time soon, you’d be wrong. Things go from bad to worse this week, when she gets in over her head in trying to protect Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) from the drug-dealing thugs he has aligned himself with.
Hoping to not only get her job back, but get an advance on her wages and pay off the villainous Harvey (Will Mellor), Leanne is left worried when all she can get together is £1,000 in a loan from Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) after Imran Habeeb (Charlie De Melo) refuses to pay her early.
Approaching the drug dealer’s car, she tells him that he’ll only be getting the £1,000 she has, handing it over and hoping that’ll be the end of the matter. Harvey however has different ideas, hitting back with the threat that he’ll put both her and Simon in hospital if he doesn’t receive the rest of the cash he’s owed.
Though Leanne later tells Simon everything can now go back to normal, audiences will spot her pulling a pouch of drugs from her handbag; she’s taking over Simon’s drug-dealing role to keep Harvey sweet and her loved ones safe.
As the week rolls on, Leanne fights back tears as she goes to her very first drug drop, ushered into a seedy flat whilst he checks out the product he’s bought. She knows she’s trapped in this game and for now, it looks as if there’s no way out. With nobody to confide in, will Leanne ever be able to get her life back on track?
Meanwhile, Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) enjoys flirting with Alina Pop (Ruxandra Porojnicu) at the café and so, when she later in the week asks him to take a look at the old banger he spots her driving around the street, he’s thrilled. When he learns that she actually knows her way around a motor because of her family’s history, the connection continues to mount.
Completely smitten, Tyrone still can’t hide his shock when, at the end of the week, Alina confesses she has feelings for him. He reacts terribly, but later apologises and the pair agree to forget everything that was said. With clear sparks on both sides however, is it just a matter of time before the two get together?
Also this week, Abi Franklin (Sally Carman) confides in Sally Webster (Sally Jane Dynevor MBE) about not wanting a huge, lavish wedding, before telling her that she would be honoured if she’d conduct the ceremony.
Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) is also made up when he’s asked by Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) to be chief usher at what could be the wedding of the summer.
Coronation Street continues with double episodes on ITV this Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
