With tensions rising on the road to SummerSlam 2015, Battleground was the final pay-per-view stop-off before some of the best athletes on the planet got together for a huge night. That being said, Battleground itself is a spectacle worth watching time and time, if just for two matches alone.
Acting not only as a stepping stone to SummerSlam, but as one in the current Diva's Revolution taking the company by storm, a brilliant triple threat match between Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Brie Bella takes place, where the three prove their worth inside the squared circle. It's a brilliant bout with Charlotte and Sasha making their WWE pay-per-view debuts, instantly winning the hearts of the WWE Universe.
Props must go to The New Day for injecting some life into the tag division, and whilst they're currently the WWE Tag Team Champions, this wasn't the pay-per-view which would see them take the gold, instead having them lose to Prime Time Players in an energetic and engaging match.
We've also got a lot of love for John Cena after he brought relevance back to the United States Championship, leaving it up for grabs in an open challenge but crashing through every opponent on his way - including Kevin Owens in arguably the best match of the night at this pay-per-view.
Battleground's main event comes in the form of Seth Rollins defending his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against the returning Brock Lesnar. The odds were stacked against the champ, and as Lesnar managed to execute 13 german suplexes in the match it seemed all but won for the challenge. A huge F5 sent Rollins crashing into the mat, but when Lesnar covered his opponent, the lights went out and The Undertaker made his much-talked-about return.
Taker hit Lesnar with a lowblow, chokeslam and two tombstone piledrivers before the match was called off, ending in a no contest, with Rollins retaining the championship and the Taker/Lesnar rivalry gaining a huge boost. It was the perfect way to set things up for SummerSlam, pure brilliance on the part of WWE creative.
The Blu-ray version of Battleground is beautiful to watch and crystal clear, but the extras fans get with the additional price aren't all that great. They're treated to some clips from the Smackdown and Raw episodes that followed Battleground, such as Cena telling Owens that 'the champ is still here', but a bit of commentary or something extra would have definitely elevated the whole production to new heights.
Whilst there are four great matches which we've spoken about above, the rest really fail to muster any huge response which is a deadly sin for a pay-per-view such as this one. Despite that, multiple watches of Owens, Cena, Taker, Lesnar, Rollins, Charlotte, Brie and Sasha as well as The New Day and Prime Time Players are hugely enjoyable.
