It has taken PETA two weeks to go through the pile of photos of vegan baked goods before making their decision and Newcastle Upon Tyne blogger Maisie's creation came out on top.

She has now been given the title of 2016 Great Vegan Bake-Off champion for her Great British Lemon Meringue Show Stopper. PETA chose the winner based on several factors, including vote count.

"We were inundated with terrific cruelty-free dishes, and it was a real task to choose just one champion", says PETA's Elisa Allen. "Congratulations to Maisie! While all the entrants are winners in our book, Maisie's decadent lemon meringue cake had us salivating. The addition of aquafaba (chickpea water) meringue is both unexpected and inspired, and her easy-to-follow recipe shows just how simple vegan baking can be."

Eggs and dairy feature all too often in baking recipes- so many a cow and chicken are suffering all for the sake of our sweet tooth.

The good news is that these animal based foods can be replaced in such recipes for cruelty free, healthier options.

Dairy foods and eggs contain a wealth of cholesterol and saturated fat making them the key contributors to the UK's most prevalent killers- including heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and cancer.

This is just one of the reasons why 20% of people aged between 16 and 24 are opting for the vegan lifestyle according to Mintel.
