Francis Boulle and Judy James Talk About Chivalry

Opening doors, pulling chairs out, standing for others to sit; these are all things that any chivalrous gentlemen wouldn’t hesitate to do. Luckily, new research shows that 90 per cent of men admitted they want to make more of an effort to be more chivalrous. The great news is that 8 out of 10 men already regularly open doors for people! Judi James an expert in behaviour and communication says, “Chivalry has eroded over time as its often seen as an old-fashioned skill with no place in modern life thanks to sexual equality and even some of the aggressive or confrontational role models for ' success' that we often see on TV. “But chivalrous behaviour can be vital in terms of networking, socialising and dating. It's an important form of communication and charm should never be confused with smarm.” The survey was commissioned by Gillette encourages men to be a gentleman this Movember, not only by growing a ‘tache to support the efforts, but by recognising and putting good manners into practise. The study also showed that 1 in 3 people had been sworn at in the last month and 1 in 5 just said they not only used, but relied, on swearing in everyday conversation. The study explored various areas of gentlemanly behaviour including; use of language, public conduct, principles, the effect of technology and role models. Other findings revealed that 25 per cent of people admit to clipping their nails on the tube, whilst a further 30 per cent have noticed nose picking and 20 per cent of people have been subjected to public displays of affection, in the past month. During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Jared Regan, Gillette Brand Manager said, “In addition to raising funds and awareness of men’s health issues, our Movember campaign aims to celebrate the timeless qualities of the gentleman and we are encouraging men up and down the country to embrace the spirit of the ‘Mo.” “To date over 349,797 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas have signed up to take part in Movember and we are extremely grateful for everyone’s support. In addition to a £100,000 donation, we have opened a traditional barbers on 10 Newburgh Street, which offers free ‘tash touch-ups’ for Mo Bros until 30th November.”
