Cheryl Cole announcing her new marriage online is proof that couples are following in celeb footsteps, choosing to use social media to tell their friends and family about their big life events, according to Samsung.

Gone are the days when you used to make as special trip to see all of the family to show off the ring and regale them with your engagement story. Just a quick snap and a message and all of your family and friends know.

Placing a notice in the local paper used to be the way to reach those family members and friends that you had perhaps not seen since the big proposal or big day. It is far easier to post a picture on Facebook or tweet, but it begs the question- it might be faster but is it a substitute for seeing your mother’s face when you show her the ring or your Grandma telling you about her big day once the site of your new ring conjures up images of the past?

Cheryl Cole saved on the cost of an extra message by posting about her marriage and engagement all in one, so it’s no surprise that social networking is the most popular way to say ‘I’m getting hitched!’ or ‘I’m married!’

Some are even opting for a text over a phone call with a lot of family members finding out this way, missing out on the inevitable scream from your mum down the phone.

When it comes to marriage, Brits do prefer to tell this story face to face; however there is a small percentage that still use the personal device’s at their fingertips to pass on the news of one of the biggest days of their lives.
