The worst case scenario, after you have planned to propose for weeks, you’ve picked out the ring, ordered it, paid for it, hidden it and then when it comes to the crunch- you lose it!? Three months’ worth of salary down the plughole!

A Vox Pop done by Endsleigh insurance found that people have lost these important pieces of jewellery in some very strage places and in some weird ways! Some of the men hang their head in so much shame that they don’t want to be named!

The ring and the Argos flat pack furniture

Luke O’ Neil – age 33 from Sheffield

This unfortunate individual thought some romantic bedroom based DIY – in the form of a new set of wardrobes along with fancy meal and proposal would be the ideal way to stage a surprise proposal.

Unfortunately, the flat packed furniture proved problematic and fell apart upon construction. The unwitting suitor packed the engagement ring back up by mistake in a plastic bag with all the nuts and bolts and sent it back to their local Argos.

Argos was unable to track the return at the depot so unfortunately the ring was lost in the deepest darkest depths of a furniture depot forevermore.

The ring and the chocolate muffin

One suitor shared the tale of a proposal that went wrong after a slight disagreement in a restaurant. After planning to propose over dessert a lovers tiff resulted in the ring being stuck in the top of a chocolate muffin and placed in a doggy bag which was handed back to him by the restaurants winking waiter.

Deciding the car journey home might be the moment to break the ice; this gentleman decided to hand the chocolate muffin (with the diamond solitaire peeking out the top) over to his girlfriend. Still furious with her other half she chucked the muffin out of the car window whilst they drove down the motorway. Neither ring nor muffin were ever seen again.

The tale of two rings and the surfing holiday

Not one but two rings were lost on an ill-fated surfing holiday where two friends had decided to simultaneously propose to their girlfriends. They forgot to remove the rings from inside their wet suit pockets where they had packed them for safe keeping through airport security.

Excited at the prospect of catching some waves when they got to the beach they both completely failed to remember the location of the rings which got washed away and are now presumably resting on the ocean floor somewhere exotic.

Rory Grant, Home Account Manager from Endsleigh commented, “It’s worth remembering that engagement rings are the single most expensive item you will ever take out of the home. People insure phones and tablet devices all the time but many don’t think to check that a pricy piece of jewellery may not be covered by home insurance once taken outside of the home.”

As the tales of these hapless suitors go to show, engagement rings can end up getting mislaid in some very unusual ways! Indeed, in 2013, Endsleigh quoted that they spent a huge £950k in payouts relating to jewellery claims.
