Weddings can cost anywhere in excess of £20,000 making them one of the most expensive days of a couple’s lives but it isn’t just the Bride and Groom who are getting hit with massive costs.

British wedding guests are spending, on average, £440 just to attend a wedding!

It’s been found that most of us will spend a week’s wage on the event and with most of us attending up to five weddings a year it is costing us thousands just to attend weddings.

Helen North, Head of Marketing for fashion etailer and home shopping catalogue Kaleidoscope who commissioned the survey, said, “The cost of weddings is always considered from the perspective of the bride and groom, but just how much does it cost the guests and where do they see the need to spend money to ensure they are the very best wedding guest.

It’s no surprise to see that most of the money goes on the outfit when attending a wedding.

Women put the most importance on this and 70 per cent would pay over £150 for their perfect wedding guest outfit.

Helen said, “It’s wonderful to see from our survey results that despite the current economic climate, it is still important for British men and women to celebrate weddings in style.”

Next on the spending list was the accommodation which saw 61 per cent of Brits spending over £150 once again.

The wedding gift came rather low on the list of priorities yet saw 50 per cent of guests spending over £100 on the Bride and Groom.

Now what use would a celebration be without alcohol? Yes, Brits even budgeted for alcohol to celebrate the union between the Bride and Groom.

Just under half of Brits said they would put away £50 or more for drinks to celebrate at the wedding reception.

How much would you spend when being a wedding guest? If you were the Bride would you want your guests to spend so much?
