A couple of weeks relaxing and unwinding in a luxury, tropical paradise still tends to be the honeymoon of choice, however, there is a growing trend for a “once in a lifetime” adventure. The choice seems to be endless, so we’ve asked specialist travel company, The Honeymoon Fixer, to recommend ten of their favourite destinations.

Want something out of the ordinary?

Botswana

It is often said that Botswana offers some of the best game viewing on the continent with incredible scenic, open landscapes. Your days will be action packed with game drives, bush walks and boat trips through the Okavanga Delta. The luxurious, eco-sensitive camps blend in perfectly with their surroundings and you’ll be treated to numerous wildlife sightings from comfort of your room! Evenings will be spent sipping sundowners, sitting around an open camp fire and dining under the stars. What could be more romantic?

Peru

A wonderfully vibrant country with an amazing history and stunning scenery. There is masses to explore but we suggest starting off in the Sacred Valley which you can explore on a horseback, bike or river raft before heading to world renowned, Machu Picchu. From there a visit to the Inca city, Choquequirao, is a must, followed by Cusco and then ending up at one of the fabulously laid back Peruvian beach resorts.

Costa Rica

A biologically diverse country, home to an amazing array of exotic birds and animals. Start your honeymoon in Aranel, one of Costa Rica’s where you can explore the rainforest, discover waterfalls and relax in hot springs all within view of the volcano. Lake Arenal offers plenty of activities including white water rafting, canyoning, zip wiring and fishing. Spend a few days at Manuel Antonio where you can enjoy the national park and take a thrilling canopy tour of the forest. You will spot monkeys, sloths, toucans and other wildlife. Finally head to the world famous Osa Peninsula. There you can snorkel off Cano Island and explore the lush jungle while staying at a luxurious, eco hotel.

Borneo

Famous for it’s orangutans Borneo is definitely a great destination if you are looking for adventure. Visit Sepilok, where you can see orangutans as they are re-habituated from areas that have suffered from deforestation or poaching. Then travel up the Kinabatangan River, a haven for wild orangutans, proboscis monkeys, mouse deer, wild boar and buffalo. To experience an example of Borneo’s pristine primary rainforest go to the Danum Valley where is a wonderful canopy walkway and a good viewpoint. Finish the honeymoon with some relaxation and water activities on the paradise island of Pulau Tiga.

Galapagas Islands

Anyone looking for a unique experience need look no further! From your luxury hotel you will be able to walk along the beach amongst sea lions, amazing birds like the blue footed boobies, iguanas and plenty more including the famous giant tortoise. The Galapagos is a volcanic archipelago consisting of rugged lava flows, mountain grasslands and sandy beaches. It always pops up on people’s bucket lists but far better to put it top of your honeymoon list!

Rwanda

A trip to see the critically endangered mountain gorillas is without doubt a once in a lifetime adventure and one you certainly won’t forget. Although only small, Rwanda is a beautiful country blessed with truly spectacular scenery. Stay in one of it’s luxurious lodges and spend your days tracking the gorillas through the jungle in Volcanoes National Park. Relax in the evening over a candlelit dinner gazing over the lakes and volcanoes in the distance.

Vietnam

It is said that Vietnam offers everything that travellers love about South East Asia - spectacular scenery, delicious food, culture, history, relaxation as well as unparalleled luxury. Step on board a boat and meander around the famous Halong Bay, trek through the Sapa Mountains, and soak up the atmosphere while wandering around the many vibrant markets. To get an understanding of Vietnam’s history there are some really interesting museums. We also recommend stopping at one of the wonderful coastal areas, like Nha Tang, to spend a few days relaxing by one of the many gorgeous, palm-tree lined beaches.

India

Whether you have visited India before or not, the aptly named Golden Triangle, is the ideal area to explore to get a true flavour of the country. The well trodden route passes through Delhi, Agra and Jaipur on what is arguably the ultimate Indian adventure. The route can be travelled via road or rail and you will get to see fabulous forts, glittering palaces and enjoy the rich cultural history of the states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Andaman Islands make a good last stopover. Spending a few days on these gorgeous islands will give you a chance to relax and reflect on your honeymoon adventure before returning home.

Brazil

Couples wanting to honeymoon somewhere more unusual and adventurous should definitely consider Brazil. Paddle up the Amazon through the rain forest, climb giant trees, spot amazing wildlife and birds before heading to Bahia to soak up it’s laid back atmosphere, waterfalls and white sandy beaches.
