In other areas of life, tradition may be fading, however when it comes to marriage, one still stands strong. That is the dream of your husband to be getting down on one knee with a diamond ring, according to Beaverbrooks, because it has to be a diamond.

A large number of budding brides still want their future spouse to ask their father for his permission to marry their prospective bride. Surprisingly it’s the younger aspiring brides that want to uphold these traditions, with 18-24 year olds having the most passion for them. Older brides seem to be less preoccupied with the need for formality and do things in their own way.

People are trying to change the face of proposing all the time with flash mobs, public proposals, popping the question through the medium of song, however on the whole they are failing to impress enough to  become commonplace.

When it comes to the ring- celebrities play a big part in what women want from their wedding band, with Kim Kardashian, Kate Middleton and Beyoncé’s ring becoming a frim talking point among aspirational women in a long term relationship.

It is no shock that the first person women believe should know about their engagement is their mum with over half agreeing that she should be the first person to hear the news. Closely followed by Dads and best friends.

In terms of who asks for the hand in marriage a huge 74% of women still want to be asked and would not be prepared to themselves if their partner could not pluck up the courage.

Anna Blackburn, for Beaverbrooks, said: “The research shows that that many women still yearn for old fashioned romance and their ideal engagement ring is a massive part of that experience. Diamond engagement rings signify commitment and love so it’s no wonder that the tradition still holds so much importance. Traditionally the man would pick a ring as a surprise but we often find a couple will do this together. Some women even take a picture of their ideal diamond ring to share with their partner as a helpful hint. Whichever way the ring is chosen, our teams are on hand to make sure they pick out a ring that will enhance the romance, to make sure those old romantics have the perfect engagement.”
