Emily asks :

Hi Lucy,

I keep feeling bad and regretting things I have done in the past. I can't stop thinking about it! What should I do?

Our Reply

Hi Emily,

It is perfectly normal to have regrets- everyone does- it is important to take those things that we are not proud of and learn form them so we don’t take the same path next time.

Have you spoken to your friends or family about this? It might be worth trying to open up to those closest to you and telling them how you feel. Those who are older might have some advice to give you, if they too have felt regret at some point in their lives.

Why not write a list of things that you regret in one column and then write in the other how you can turn it into a positive. If it is saying sorry to someone, putting something in place to avoid doing it again or doing something that shows you have changed since it happened. This might help put things in perspective and help you move on. Putting them down on paper might help you feel as though you have eased the burden a bit and get some clarity.
